Jesus Christ Superstar at The Muny

Why see Jesus Christ Superstar?

Heaven awaits in the perennially popular Superstar

Broadway's first rock opera musical lights up the stage this June, as part of the Muny's 2017 season. Originally created as a concept album at the tail end of the 1960s, it overcame the accusations of heresy to become one of the 20th century's most radical shows. The brainchild of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the musical features classic standards including Don't Know How to Love Him and Heaven on Their Minds, portraying the Lord as a rebellious rabble-rouser and even heartthrob! And don't forget about Judas Iscariot, who gets more than his usual share of the limelight.....

Jesus as rebel leader

Jesus' meteor-like rise in popularity thanks to his radical teachings, are akin to modern-day celebrity worship, making this a musical of the ages, and far from being out-dated, despite its Biblical setting. Controversially portrayed as a tragic antihero, Jesus' 12th disciple Judas becomes increasingly disillusioned with the prophet, worried that the true message of God is being corrupted by his leader's ever-growing celebrity. As a desperate attempt to save God's Word, he commits the ultimate betrayal. The struggles of both prophet and traitor are perfectly encapsulated within the hit songs Everything's Alright, Heaven On Their Minds, and of course, the iconic title song, Superstar, this is an eye-opening experience of Jesus' journey, that allows us to question our own modern-day values.

Jesus Christ knocks it out of the park!

Splashy, hip, modern and dramatically acted out, this was a powerful way to show how the Muny can handle rock, opera, drama and action on a pop art stage. Superb acting. Heartfelt singing. I want to go again. this production takes liberty and represents power and evil with creative license- a little Elvis twist, but it matches the music and vibe. ... Read more

Perfect for the Times

Wonderful show. They’ve made the stage and choreography contemporary but stayed true to the original music. The actors and actresses were wonderful musicians, singers and dancers. This might be the best JCS I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot! ... Read more

Powerful and modern

The voices were amazing, can’t get use to the high quality of these actors in the Broadway series. good use of limited stage space. Loved the dystopic feel of the costumes, styling and set, made it quite modern yet timeless. Brings the story to life, fabulous. ... Read more
