Fun Home

Why see Fun Home?

Winner of five Tony Awards!

Hailed as Broadway's most original new musical in years, the multi Tony-winning Fun Home is hitting the road in 2016. An emotionally charged and poignant family drama, Fun Home is inspired by the graphic novel of the same name by Alison Bechdel, in which she explores her coming out and the suicide of her domineering father Bruce. An inventively staged patchwork of memories and conversations taking place over three different time periods, the show is written by Lisa Kron (Voyage to Lesbos) and is laced together with a remarkable, Seventies-inflected score from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie).

Fun Home first played Off-Broadway at The Public Theatre in 2013, before transferring to Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre. Utterly distinct from The Great White Way's usual assortment of revivals and movie adaptations, this production was adored by critics and audiences alike, and became the year's most atypical smash hit! It was nominated for an astounding twelve Tony Awards, and won five, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

What is Fun Home About?

Alison Bechdel looks back through three separate periods of her life, a jumble of memories that always seem to center on her controlling father Bruce, who was prone to violent mood swings and bouts of depression. Her father killed himself soon after Alison came out during college, and it's later revealed that he himself was gay, but had never been able to come out of the closet. As she reconstructs their relationship in her mind, Alison wonders what part her revelation played in his death.

Did You Know?

Alison Bechdel is the originator of the Bechdel Test, the simple three point test of gender equality in film that so many Hollywood blockbusters fail to pass.

Fantastic!!!

I see every show that comes to Boston, and many in NY and even in obscure, suburban theatres. This was, by far, one of the best shows I've seen in years. The casting is PERFECT! The child actors were amazing--especially young Allison. The dialogue was witty and intelligent. The sentiment, touching. The subject matter, timely. I just loved it! I will see it again while it's in town. ... Read more

AMAZING!!!!

I am from NY; moved to LA years ago. Seen many plays in my day; but this one blew me away. I was apprehensive to see it with my 11 y/o God-daughter; but proud to say we both loved it immensely. I am 51 y/o. This play was so touching, so heartfelt, so moving, so real. Yesterday (at the 1pm show), I stood up and cheered at the end; entire audience gave it a standing ovation. Thank you for such a brave, poignant story of true life and self- realization! Very poweful story told with humor and heart. God bless you all for putting on a masterpiece production :) I highly recommend this show to everyone who enjoys genuine stories told with great heart and enthusiasm!!! *****10 stars***** ... Amazing!!!

I've been a fan of Alison Bechdel for years, and read Fun Home when it first came out. I also insisted that our local library, in a small town near Hendersonville, NC, purchase a copy. When I heard there would be a Broadway production of the difficult family issues Bechdel had written about, I was surprised. It seemed too good to be true that the Peace Center was staging a production of this musical in Greenville, SC. As it turned out, this production exceeded my wildest expectations. The cast was incredible, from Carly Gold making her professional debut as small Alison to Kate Shindle as Alison and Robert Petkoff as her father Bruce. Everyone on the stage sang, danced, and acted with verve and aplomb. Musicians added live backing to the songs, whether actors were dancing, singing, or both. The sets and lighting were phenomenal. There were people of all ages at Saturday's matinee, and few of them left early. Thanks for a great production - wish there were 10 stars available! ... Read more
